GABLS3 LES Intercomparison

Science Questions

  • Study the sensitivity of simulated turbulence statistics with respect to different LES-SGS closures (revisit GABLS1 LES intercomparison)
  • Study the sensitivity of simulated turbulence statistics with respect to grid/filter resolutions (revisit GABLS1 LES intercomparison)
  • Assess the applicability of Nieuwstadt's local scaling hypothesis in moderately stable and transitional boundary layers
  • Understand the evolution of morning transitions (mixed layer growth, role of entrainment etc.)
  • Evaluate various contemporary stable boundary layer height parameterizations
  • Quantify the effects of atmospheric stability on turbulence spectra
  • Probe the dependence of turbulent Prandtl number on stability parameters (e.g., gradient Richardson number) and height
  • Simulate turbulence bursting events
